Archaeologists believe Egypt’s large pyramids are the work of the Old Kingdom society that rose to prominence in the Nile Valley after 3000 B.C. The earliest known Egyptian pyramid was built during the third dynasty (2690 BCE to 2610 BCE) during the reign of Djoser (circa 2650). In fact, in Dashur lies the first smooth-sided pyramid in the world! Egypt’s oldest pyramid was built almost 5,000 years ago but a similar structure hidden beneath rubble could be up to four times older. Assembled between 2630 and 2611 B.C.
